Bleacher Report – Vikings

Read this 2010 article on Brett Favre and dream, Vikings fans

By Derek Wetmore

The Vikings are looking for a quarterback. Unfortunately, the guy who fueled their most recent thrill ride ain’t coming out of retirement any time soon.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said on Thursday that the team had confidence in Shaun Hill, but that they’d monitor the market for QBs. A reporter with a sense of humor asked if he’d called Peyton [Manning] yet to ask if the Super Bowl champ was interested in coming out of retirement.

“We did talk to Brett,” Spielman joked. “I think the gold jacket put the seal on that one.”

Say it together, Vikings fans:

Don’t mess with us like that!

I got a kick out of an old article a friend of mine shared on Facebook recently. It was a clip from 2010, the year after Favre’s romp to the 2009 NFC title game, when the gunslinger was contemplating whether he should return for another season or hang up the cleats. That was an annual event. Those were the days.

The humor for me came from imagining Favre making those 2010 statements in the here and now. A sample:

“I owe it to this organization to give it one more try,” Favre told reporters the August after his late interception sealed Minnesota’s fate that January.

There’s more.

“I could make a case for both playing, not playing,” Favre said. “This is a very good football team. The chances [of going to the Super Bowl] here are much greater than other places. From that standpoint, it was always going to be easier [to return].

“Part of me said it was such a great year, it would be easy to say, ‘Hey, can’t play any better, why even try?’ Then the other part is, ‘Guys are playing on a high level. Why don’t I go back out?’ The expectations are high here, as they should be.”

Alas, Spielman said being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame will prevent Favre from putting on the purple and gold one more time.

It could have been fun. Forty-six years old is the new 30.

What a night! I’m just so incredibly humble, honored and blessed
