Zimmer reveals hamstring injury has held Peterson back at practice

By Derek Wetmore

MANKATO — Adrian Peterson on Saturday was held out of his second consecutive day of practice with what head coach Mike Zimmer described as a hamstring pull.

“Working out, like the week before [training camp], he was working out and he pulled his hammy a little bit,” Zimmer said. “He can do things, he just can’t turn it all the way loose. So we’re just being careful.”

Peterson was held out of Thursday’s practice almost entirely, as he worked on a side field with running and agility drills. He did participate in a few drills, which may have been playbook installation portions of practice.

On Friday, Peterson again could be seen on the side field getting inidivual work in, and he again did not participate in the team portions of the practice. Friday’s drills included running with a gradual acceleration into a sprint, and Peterson appeared to have little if any trouble turning on the jets.

One silver lining of his absence early in training camp is that the Vikings are getting a few more looks — albeit in practices without full pads — at other younger running backs, specifically Jerick McKinnon, who has taken over as the top running back in Peterson’s absence.

“It’s good, we get to see some of these young backs. But he’ll be out here fairly soon, I think,” Zimmer said of Peterson.

The first padded practice will be Sunday.
