Bleacher Report – Vikings

NFI/PUP: 4 Vikings players, including QB Heinicke, out for start of camp

By Derek Wetmore

MANKATO — The Vikings on Friday announced that four players will not begin training camp with the rest of the team.

Defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis and tight end Rhett Ellison have been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. While quarterback Taylor Heinicke and guard Mike Harris are on the Non-football Injury (NFI) list, Zimmer said.

Heinicke reported to training camp in a cast and was seen Thursday and Friday getting around with the use of a wheeled scooter. The third-string QB cut his leg while trying to break into his own apartment after a late-night movie, according reports in the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune.

Zimmer looked around for the team’s PR Director after the head coach was asked how he’d responded when Heinicke called him with the news. He thought better of sharing his word-for-word reaction with the media.

“Darn it,” Zimmer claims he said. “Or something like that.”

Zimmer said Harris is dealing with a medical situation, but he declined to elaborate further. If healthy, he should be in the competition at right guard with Brandon Fusco, who lined up at the position with the first unit during Friday’s walk-through.

Ellison had his season ended early last year when he tore his patellar tendon in the Vikings’ final regular season game.

Back stiffness for DT Kenrick Ellis, I hear. Starting camp on PUP. Nothing major. Should be fine shortly.
