Vikings rookie Alexander gets his own day in hometown

By Andrew Krammer

Mackensie Alexander remembers the example Edgerrin James set for him.

One day on a football field in Immokalee, Fla., James, then a NFL running back, returned to his alma mater and saw something in a teenage Alexander that would prove to be prophetic.

“The first thing he said was, and I’ll never forget it, he said, ‘You don’t see kids like you working like this anymore,’” Alexander recalled.

The compliment came with a pair of James’ gloves. Years later, not long after the Vikings drafted Alexander in the second round (54th overall) this spring, he joined with Adidas to pay it forward via $10,000 worth of shoes and clothes to the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, Fla.

It’s, in part, why the county has named Tuesday, June 28 as ‘Mackensie Alexander Day.

“Mackensie Alexander is someone who has overcome great challenges that most of us have not faced,” commissioner Penny Taylor said in a statement. “And is someone who, in spite of his circumstances, has excelled and given back to his community against all odds.”

Alexander, 22, spent many early hours of his childhood picking oranges and tomatoes with his twin brother as the sons of Haitian immigrants. Hard work was necessary and translated to football, a life-changing path for the Clemson cornerback who didn’t allow a touchdown in his final 23 college games. Alexander was held out for much of the Vikings offseason program with an undisclosed injury.

“There’s a lot of people in America that are successful, but they don’t come back home,” Alexander said last month from a Vikings practice field. “They don’t show their face, and the kids don’t know who they are. They don’t have anybody to look after, and that’s when you’ve got problems of kids being bad, they’re going to jail, not doing positive things. I just want them to look at me as a positive outlet.”
