Ep. 8: On a Twins fire sale, Smith’s Vikings deal and the Gophers latest scandal

By Andrew Krammer

On this episode of the Sportswriters Roundtable, host Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press welcomes John Shipley (Pioneer Press), Dave Campbell (Associated Press) and Andrew Krammer (1500ESPN).

First, Murphy turns to Shipley and Campbell for answers on where the Minnesota Twins go from here. What could be gained from a fire sale? Who would be the most appealing to other teams? And why manager Paul Molitor should get the ‘best of three.’

Both Campbell and Shipley shed light on the latest issue in Dinkytown as new Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle has a scandal in the wrestling program. Between drug-dealing wrestlers, fundraising trouble and a downtrodden basketball program, where should Coyle turn his attention first?

Then we turn to the Vikings and a contract extension for safety Harrison Smith. Krammer discusses why the deal was so important for a surging defense. Smith is the NFL’s highest-paid safety by virtue of money per year, but what does the actual guaranteed money tell us? Also, they’re not handing over a starting spot to second-year cornerback Trae Waynes.

Finally, Campbell was in the courtroom last week when the Vikings and Wells Fargo swung purses at each other over signage near the new stadium.
