Anthony Barr set to launch foundation Saturday to support single parents

By Dane Mizutani

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — In his young football career, Anthony Barr has proven that he’s a quick learner on the field.

With his new charitable endeavor — appropriately named the Anthony Barr Foundation — set to launch on Saturday, Barr is hoping those quick-learning skills translate to his passions off of it.

Inspired by his mother, Lori Barr, who raised her son as a single parent, Anthony wanted to give back.

“I was raised in a single-parent household,” Barr said Wednesday. “It wasn’t easy, even though it wasn’t too tough. It was something my mom and I felt it was a good time to start giving back. With the platform I have, and the success I’ve had recently, I felt like it’d be a good idea to help the next person.”

The mission of his foundation, according to the website, is to provide financial support to single mothers trying to further their education while raising their children.

Barr, who was drafted ninth overall by the Vikings in 2014, said his mother continued to pursue her education for as long as he could remember. She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Loyola Marymount University.

“The foundation is focused around single-parent households — primarily single mothers — and helping them further their education,” Barr said. “That will hopefully allow them to attain a higher quality of living down the road.”

To start, Barr said the goal is to provide 10 mothers each with a $10,000 scholarship. That, Barr said, will help with the cost of tuition as well as the cost of childcare. They aim to also provide resources for planning educational pursuits. Barr is entering the third year of his rookie contract with the Vikings, which paid him north of a $7.5 million signing bonus on a deal worth nearly $13 million.

He hopes the foundation will eventually have the reach to help assist single-parent households nationwide.

“Obviously the start of it is going to be in LA and then we’re going to branch out,” he said. “We want to hopefully get to Minnesota and get some events both there and here.”

It’s something Barr said he’s been thinking about since he entered the league. Now he’s excited to see it finally come to fruition.

“It felt like now was the right time to do it,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have a lot of success with it this coming Saturday.”

Barr, 24, has been held out of Vikings OTAs as he says he’s “taking it easy,” presumably with an undisclosed injury.

He’ll also host a second annual Anthony Barr youth camp in Los Angeles next month.
