Greenway vows $10,000 worth of supplies to flood relief in Peterson’s hometown

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — These types of NFL player actions don’t get enough eyes and ears in the modern media landscape.

There are no touchdowns, indictments or scandalous quotes in this one. Last week, Adrian Peterson pledged $100,000, matching donations and sponsor supplies, including water, teas and juices, to relief efforts in his hometown of Palestine, Texas after torrential rain claimed the lives of six people and caused significant damage to 35 homes, uprooting families.

On Friday, Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway vowed $10,000 worth of supplies to the cause.

The move should come as no surprise to Vikings followers as Greenway, entering his 11th NFL season in Minnesota, is perhaps the team’s most philanthropic player. His Lead the Way Foundation has provided aid for chronically-ill children and their families since it was founded in 2008. He’s the Vikings’ reigning and three-time Community Man of the Year and was awarded the union’s highest honor, the Byron ‘Whizzer’ White Award, in 2015.

“You always hope you have a 10-year career in one place and you can really set your roots and be something more important than just a football player,” Greenway said in December. “I’ve tried to do that, and my wife has tried to do that. We’re still trying to succeed and push as much as we can.”
