NFL to allow umlaut on Moritz Böhringer’s jersey

By Andrew Krammer

The NFL got a little more international on Wednesday.

An umlaut might make an appearance during the 2016 NFL regular season as the league approved Vikings receiver Moritz Böhringer to spell his name correctly. Böhringer, a sixth-round draft pick, became the first player in league history to be drafted straight from Europe. He’ll join Washington’s Pierre Garçon in the small group of players sporting diacritical marks on their backs.

That’s if the feel-good story continues. Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer recently said he’d like to pump the brakes on Böhringer’s publicity. He ran a 4.43 time in the 40-yard dash to pair with a 6-foot-4-inch frame and now all the rest needs to fall into place. Relatively simple adjustments like long meetings and media obligations will soon be met with big leaps like six-foot cornerbacks and press coverage.

“The offense is new to everyone, so that’s good for me,” Böhringer said during last week’s rookie minicamp. “But general football knowledge, I need to do some work.”
