Photos: Turf installation begins inside Vikings’ new home

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — In strips at least 160 feet long, installation for one of the last ‘major milestones’ began this week inside the Vikings’ new home.

Construction workers started placing the artificial turf inside U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday. It’s one of the final steps toward completion of the $1.1 billion project with just more than 10 weeks before the scheduled ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority. Kelm-Helgen added the turf is expected to be more durable, lasting an estimated eight to 10 years. Logos will be sewn — not painted — into pieces of turf, which can be removed for other events. The installation process is expected to take three to four weeks.

“The old Metrodome turf was very different,” Kelm-Helgen said.

About 25 yards of the football field was visible on Tuesday afternoon. Once completed, the turf will be covered for non-athletic events such as the two concerts scheduled before the first Vikings preseason game on Aug. 28. A hard top and real grass field will cover the turf for the stadium’s first sporting event, an Aug. 3 soccer match between AC Milan and Chelsea.
