Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings sign ex-Gophers returner Stoudermire and a quarterback-turned-cornerback

By Andrew Krammer

After a tryout this weekend, former University of Minnesota return man Troy Stoudermire is now a member of the Vikings.

Stoudermire and cornerback Tre Roberson signed contracts on Monday, the team announced. The offseason roster is now at its 90-man limit. The Vikings held one open roster spot after agreeing to terms with 10 undrafted free agents last week, but cornerback Eric Rawls did not sign, which created another opening.

Stoudermire, 25, played both receiver and defensive back for the Gophers, settling in as a cornerback and impact kick returner. He went undrafted in 2013 and spent part of that summer with the Bengals, while Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was still Cincinnati’s defensive coordinator. Following his release, Stoudermire (5-10, 199) went to Canada and has played for both the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He’s listed as a receiver for the Vikings.

Stoudermire broke the NCAA record for career kickoff return yardage (3,615) in December 2012.

Roberson, 23, is a converted college quarterback who went undrafted this spring. He played for both Indiana and Illinois State, throwing for nearly 5,500 yards and 48 touchdowns in his final two seasons for the FCS’s Redbirds. Roberson (6-0, 205) reportedly worked out as a receiver and defensive back for teams leading up to last month’s NFL Draft. He’ll play cornerback for the Vikings.
