Miss mock drafts already? With a 2017 first-round pick, the Vikings select…

By Andrew Krammer

There are places to go for people to treat addictions.

By now, that place might exist for NFL mock drafts. But it’s not here.

Every year, ESPN rides the inertia from the previous mock draft season into the following year with an absurdly-early projection for a first round roughly 364 days away. For a consecutive year in his ‘way-too-early’ mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Vikings drafting an offensive tackle in the first round. Last year, it was Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley, who was taken sixth overall by the Baltimore Ravens last week. After a run on tackles in the top half of the first round, the Vikings ultimately took receiver Laquon Treadwell with the 23rd-overall pick.

This year (for 2017), McShay has the Vikings going with a USC offensive tackle of the future, again. With the 22nd-overall pick (based on record projections by Football Outsiders), the Vikings select tackle Zach Banner out of Southern California. Banner, listed 6-foot-9 and 360 pounds, is a former basketball player who has primarily started at right tackle as a sophomore and junior for the Trojans.

It’s a logical pick, even if there’s an entire NFL season to play. The Vikings’ three top tackles — Matt Kalil, Phil Loadholt and Andre Smith — are all effectively on one-year deals. Kalil, taken fourth overall out of USC in 2012, has next season to prove his long-term worth in Minnesota.
