Adrian Peterson donating $100,000 to hometown flood relief

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — Adrian Peterson said he’s always felt supported by his hometown, so it was only natural for him to act when he heard the bad news on Saturday.

Flooding in Palestine, Texas claimed the lives of six people, and Peterson is donating $100,000 and orchestrating other relief efforts to aid the town that has propped him up through his highs and lows. Peterson also pledges to match community donations up to $100,000.

“We have never been devastated like this before with this type of disaster,” Peterson said Wednesday from his Houston home. “I wanted to be able to give back to the community that has given me so much support throughout the years.”

Four children, a grandmother and a former high school classmate and teammate of Peterson’s were among those who passed away after heavy rains pounded the Texas town over the weekend. More than seven inches of rain fell in an hour on Friday night and continued into Saturday, causing significant damage to about 35 homes. The city has set up a temporary shelter with cleanup efforts underway.

Peterson said he immediately reached out to a few people to see what he could do, and ultimately partnered with the Salvation Army to raise funds. He’s also lobbying to sponsors for help and said his company, Texas Tea, is sending a truck with water, teas and juices to the area. He also is aiming for food trucks and clothing to be supplied.

Peterson, 31, still lives roughly 150 miles south of his hometown and has returned every summer for an annual Adrian Peterson Day. He said he’s always felt support from that community, and now he wants to give back.

“Especially for this to happen to my community, it wasn’t anything someone had to talk me into,” Peterson said. “It was just natural instincts for me to do something. So all the means I have, I’m trying to put to work to help out.”
