Vikings exercise fifth-year options for CB Xavier Rhodes and DT Sharrif Floyd

By Andrew Krammer

MINNEAPOLIS — At least two of the Vikings’ three 2013 first-round picks will be under contract for the 2017 season.

On Monday, the Vikings let cornerback Xavier Rhodes and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd know their fifth-year options were exercised under their rookie contracts, according to each player’s agent. Floyd was taken with the 23rd-overall pick in 2013, followed two picks later by Rhodes at 25th overall.

The option for receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, taken 29th overall that year, is still publicly unknown, but it’s not expected after his last start at receiver came exactly eighteen months ago on Nov. 2, 2014.

Rhodes, 25, has started 39 games in three seasons, including every game since head coach Mike Zimmer took over before the 2014 season. Though he has played through growing pains, Rhodes has solidified himself as the Vikings’ right cornerback with 29 deflections and two interceptions in the last two seasons.

Floyd, 24, has started 23 games in two seasons since taking over for stalwart Kevin Williams as the Vikings’ three-technique defensive tackle. Floyd has been a strong asset when available, compiling 9.5 sacks and four pass deflections. Though he’s missed nine starts in the past two years due to injury, including four last season when he required midseason surgery to remove cartilage from his knee.
