Adrian Peterson posts Instagram video nearly one year after reinstatement

By Andrew Krammer

A year ago, Adrian Peterson’s future in football wasn’t certain.

Following a restructuring of his contract and another NFL rushing title, Peterson took an opportunity to reflect on his recent past Wednesday night almost a year after he was officially reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell. During the 2014 season, Peterson was banned from the field for 15 games following an indictment for disciplining his 4-year-old son with a switch. He’s since returned to lead the league in rushing as one of the only 30-year-old backs to ever do so.

In the video, Peterson says he’s offering advice from his experiences: “I keep pressing forward.”

Peterson was reinstated on April 16, 2015, and would return to the Vikings last June after missing one week of Organized Team Activities. Both sides ironed out a restructured contract, one that all but guarantees Peterson’s place on the roster in 2016, and the football reunion was complete. Peterson’s personal message references his on- and off-field successes since returning to the NFL, writing: “the Lord continued to cover me with GRACE & FAVOR! All legal issues dismissed, still no record, a new contract in the midst of the storm, a year off so the body recovered and I got paid, Adidas sponsorship, playoff contenders and NFL rushing champion at 30?

In the video, Peterson says: “Only one individual walked this earth without sin, Jesus Christ, and they tortured him and hung him from a cross. I want to leave you with this — be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character truly is who you are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. Let people judge if they’re going to judge; that’s the way of the world. But keep your head up, don’t hang it down. I’m giving you a little bit of advice — from me and how I handled it. I keep pressing forward, because at the end of the day, people want to see you fail. God wants to see you be successful.”

Peterson, 31, led the league in both carries (327) and rushing yards (1,485) last season, becoming just the third player in league history to do so at age 30 or older. He’s under contract with the Vikings through the 2017 season. The remaining guaranteed money on his contract will be paid out this season, as he’s set to make $12 million.
