Vikings continue evaluating draft’s top receivers, will host a couple next week

By Andrew Krammer

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer are indeed at TCU’s pro day Thursday to continue their evaluations on prospect Josh Doctson, a potential first-round receiver.

As the countdown to the draft ticks inside four weeks, the Vikings’ brain trust has made the rounds in their search for Teddy Bridgewater’s next receiver. Their first pick falls at No. 23 and including TCU, Spielman has made trips to at least four pro days where the draft’s top receivers have worked out, along with Ole Miss (Laquon Treadwell), Baylor (Corey Coleman) and Ohio State (Michael Thomas). They’ve also taken the hunt international, as Germany’s Moritz Boehringer, listed 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, met with Vikings officials on Wednesday night, according to NFL Media.

At least two prospects will continue their auditions in Minnesota, where Treadwell and Doctson are expected to attend the Vikings’ annual Top 30 visits on Tuesday and Wednesday, sources confirmed to 1500 ESPN. The Vikings will also host a trio of ex-Gophers in linebacker DeVondre Campebll and cornerbacks Eric Murray and Briean Boddy-Calhoun, per KSTP’s Darren Wolfson.

Doctson, 23, started his college career at Wyoming before putting together very productive junior and senior seasons at TCU, finishing with nearly 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in a two-year span. He was one of the scouting combine’s standouts, including a 41-inch vertical, and will have met with the Vikings in at least three locations between Indianapolis, Fort Worth, Tex. and Eden Prairie, Minn. before the draft. Questions arise about his slight frame, though Doctson (6-2, 202) could give the Vikings a bigger target down the sideline and in the red zone.

Treadwell, 20, had a breakout junior season at Ole Miss with 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns. He figures to be one of, if not the, first receiver off the board. Treadwell (6-2, 221) returned from a broken fibula in his sophomore season and was named first-team All-SEC last fall. He ran just a 4.6-second 40-yard dash at his pro day this week, but measured as one of the draft’s longest receiver prospects with 33 3/8-inch arms. Treadwell is another split end option, if he’s there at 23rd overall.
