Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings sign Minnesota native TE Brian Leonhardt

By Andrew Krammer

Brian Leonhardt may play professional football just miles from where he attended high school.

The Vikings signed Leonhardt to a one-year, $600,000 deal on Friday, a league source confirmed. He’s a fourth-year NFL tight end with 16 career appearances for both the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. Should he make the team, Leonhardt will play just a short drive south of his high school in Spring Lake Park, Minn. He played college football at Bemidji State University, going undrafted in 2013.

Leonhardt, who turns 26 next month, has seven catches for 39 yards. He figures to provide depth at the position as Rhett Ellison continues to rehab from a torn patellar tendon suffered on Jan. 3.

He’s another example of a Vikings’ free agent addition with connections to the coaching staff. Leonhardt played for new Vikings OL coach Tony Sparano in San Francisco. They’ve also added familiar faces in safety Michael Griffin, whom DBs coach Jerry Gray led in Tennessee, ex-Bengals linebacker Emmanuel Lamur, who played for Mike Zimmer, and former 49ers guard Alex Boone, another Sparano connection.
