Health drives Chad Greenway’s ‘one more year’ hope with Vikings

By Andrew Krammer

DULUTH, Minn. — Chad Greenway didn’t miss a single game last season, and that’s his driving force for wanting to play just one more season.

Greenway spent hours greeting fans and signing autographs on Friday during the Vikings’ inaugural ‘Winterfest’ in Duluth, Minn., which is a roughly two-hour drive from the Twin Cities. Following a radio appearance at one of the events , Greenway was serenaded by about 40 fans chanting ‘one more year.’

A fan favorite drafted out of Iowa in 2006, Greenway has said he’d like to extend his career to at least an 11th year. Just before taking some photos with waiting fans, he told a couple reporters the 2016 season would be his last.

“I think if I was able to come back and play, I’d announce that this is going to be it,” Greenway said. “Just kind of treat it that way. I think it’s nice for my family, if I get that, to have some closure and go through the season knowing that might be it. It may not be in Minnesota, we don’t know the answer to that. But the reality is, I’ve told my kids I want to play and they’re excited about that and they want me to do it.”

Greenway, 33, hopes to re-sign with the Vikings after playing out a five-year extension inked before the 2011 season. Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said he spoke with Greenway after the season and plans on talking with his agent, Marvin Demoff, before the league year begins March 9. Last season wasn’t Greenway’s most productive, but he was healthy and reliable for a defense needing linebackers. Injuries held back Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks, so the Vikings leaned more on Greenway than anticipated after he was relegated to a two-down role for the first time in his career.

The Lions’ Calvin Johnson has pointed to a tired body as reason for potentially walking away. Greenway says health is his main reason for wanting to return. He played all 17 games for the Vikings last season, a year after dealing with fractured ribs and a broken wrist. At this point, his body isn’t telling him no.

“If you go through another injury-plagued year like I had, if I had another one, two in a row, it’s like OK I’m done,” Greenway said. “Your body would be talking to you. But to come through a healthy one like, ‘wow, I feel great. I could do this again.’

“Again, I’m not going to be the guy that’s just hanging on to hang on. I want to be able to play and I want to be able to contribute. If I couldn’t do that, I wouldn’t be trying to come back.”
