On horseback, Jared Allen announces his retirement

By Andrew Krammer

After 12 NFL seasons of wrangling quarterbacks, Jared Allen has announced his retirement.

Don’t be mistaken, Allen didn’t walk away. He rode out on horseback in a short video posted Thursday morning on his official Twitter account. Allen was a fan favorite in Minnesota, with a trademark mullet, cowboy hat and calf-roping celebration. His longest stop in a successful career came with the Vikings, where he had 85.5 of his 136 career sacks in six seasons. His 22 sacks during the 2011 season are still tied for the second most in league history. Allen finishes tied for ninth on the all-time sack list.

Allen was a fourth-round pick (126th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004, playing out his rookie contract before he was traded to Minnesota. The Vikings sent a first-round pick and two third-round picks for Allen in 2008, signing him to a six-year deal. They also swapped sixth-round picks in the 2008 NFL Draft. In a rare occurrence, Allen saw every year of the lucrative contract and left in free agency after the 2013 season.

He spent two training camps with the Chicago Bears before a September trade sent him to Carolina, where he appeared in his first Super Bowl on Feb. 7.
