Report: Calvin Johnson told Lions he plans to retire

By Andrew Krammer

Another stellar wide receiver will be leaving the NFC North.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lions receiver Calvin Johnson carried out his plan to make the 2015 season his ninth and final in the NFL. He reportedly told “family and a close circle of friends” before the season of his intentions, and after the regular season informed Lions coach Jim Caldwell he was retiring.

Johnson, 30, walks away with the single season record of 1,964 yards receiving in 2012, and he ranks 27th in all-time yardage (11,619). The Lions fell from playoff team to a 7-9 record last season, with Johnson catching 88 balls for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 15 career games against the Vikings, Johnson had his best catch rate (61.8%) versus any division opponent, but had his lowest production with an average of 73 yards per game. Johnson averaged 87.1 yards against the Bears and 88.1 yards against the Packers.

The division’s vaunted receiving corps, which once included Johnson and Chicago’s Brandon Marshall, has taken a hit over the last calendar year. Marshall was traded to the Jets last spring and caught 14 touchdowns this season. While the Packers struggled through the air with Jordy Nelson recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
