Zimmer on Pat Shurmur hiring: ‘Good to get more guys’ with input

By Andrew Krammer

With Pat Shurmur, the Vikings are getting more than your average position coach.

Head coach Mike Zimmer said as such when talking to reporters this week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The Vikings have maneuvered two former head coaches onto their offensive staff this offseason, adding Tony Sparano as offensive line coach and shuffling the cards to fit Shurmur in as tight ends coach. Shurmur, as well as Sparano, brings ideas that could help the Vikings expand the offense under coordinator Norv Turner. While Turner will continue to call plays, there may be some healthier discussion inside the offensive meeting rooms.

The Vikings ranked as one of the NFL’s worst passing attacks in 2015.

“[Shurmur] has had experience. He’s been with a lot of different offenses, been a head coach, been an offensive coordinator. He’s coached the tight ends before,” Zimmer said, via VikingUpdate.com. “He’s had some experience with the Philadelphia offense, the West Coast offense. I think it’s just good to get more guys in that have input.

“I would expect all our guys to have input. The same amount of input.”

Shurmur, 50, has served as an offensive coordinator or head coach for each of the last eight seasons, and he’ll be returning to a position coach role for the first time since 2008. Though the Vikings aren’t pigeonholing Shurmur into his title and the tight end room, as Zimmer alluded.

“We’re not really into titles,” Zimmer said. “We just want guys that want to work and guys that want to be there. Pat was excited to be there. I think he was excited with the guys offensively to work with in [Kyle] Rudolph and also the team. I think he thinks they have a chance to do some good things.”

His placement as tight ends coach will also put Shurmur in position to help the Vikings where they need it most. They’d lost their running backs coach, Kirby Wilson, to Cleveland when initially reaching out to Shurmur, and decided to move their previous TEs coach, Kevin Stefanski, to fill that role, opening a spot better suited for their new hire.

“It gets [Shurmur] a little bit more involved in some of the passing game, where we’ve got to get a lot better,” Zimmer said, via ESPN.com.

Even with an offense that ranked 29th in yards and 16th in points a season ago, the Vikings are an attractive post coming off an 11-win season and division title with a young foundation of talent. That showed, as Shurmur accepted a lesser title in Minnesota before his reported interviews for coordinator-type roles with the L.A. Rams and other teams.
