Bleacher Report – Vikings

Harrison Smith expected to be named to his first Pro Bowl

By Andrew Krammer

The Vikings have another addition to the Pro Bowl as safety Harrison Smith is expected to make his first trip to Hawaii next weekend, a league source confirmed to 1500ESPN.com.

Smith, 26, anchored a secondary for a Vikings defense that allowed the fifth-fewest points per game, the franchise’s best finish since 1988. While his numbers didn’t jump off the board (two interceptions, one for a touchdown, and 1.5 sacks), Smith has started to make a name for himself with hard hits and big-time plays (t-3rd with five picks in 2014). He returned his fourth career interception for a touchdown to help the Vikings seal a playoff berth in a Week 16 win against the Giants. Smith also finished fifth on the team with 66 combined tackles despite missing three games with a hamstring injury.

The Vikings picked up Smith’s fifth-year option for the 2016 season, though he could see a multi-year extension before that’s played out. He has started 52 games since the Vikings selected him in the first round (29th overall) in 2012.

He’ll be the third Vikings player currently headed to the Pro Bowl, joining running back Adrian Peterson and defensive end Everson Griffen. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT next Sunday.

Our own KSTP’s Darren Wolfson first reported the news.
