Bleacher Report – Vikings

Pat Shurmur reportedly joining the Vikings coaching staff

By Andrew Krammer

The Vikings have reportedly hired former head coach and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur to join Mike Zimmer’s staff as an assistant.

It’s not clear what role Shurmur will serve. The Vikings have a vacancy at running backs coach, where Kirby Wilson left last week to a promotion with the Cleveland Browns. Shurmur has been an offensive coordintor or head coach since 2008, and will be the Vikings’ second hire this offseason after interviewing on Friday. Both new additions to the offensive staff, Shurmur and offensive line coach Tony Sparano, are veterans with head coaching experience.

Shurmur, 50, had a 9-23 record in two seasons as the Browns head coach (2011-2012). His last stop came as the Eagles offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly, stepping in for one game as interim head coach, a 35-30 win over the Giants on Jan. 3.

Zimmer has said he expects Norv Turner to remain offensive coordinator after the Vikings ranked fourth in rushing and 31st in passing during his second season at the controls.

FOX Sports first reported the hire.
