Bleacher Report – Vikings

After string of injuries, Vikings have fired strength & conditioning coach

By Derek Wetmore

The Vikings have made another change to the team’s support staff, likely with an eye toward keeping more players on the field in the future.

Evan Marcus, the Vikings’ strength and conditioning coordinator, has been fired, a source confirmed to 1500ESPN.com. ESPN’s Ben Goessling first reported the dismissal.

In two years under Marcus, the Vikings have lost a number of players to pectoral injuries that forced players to miss games, like Brandon Fusco, Phil Loadholt and Josh Robinson. Defensive end Brian Robison hurt his pectoral in the offseason, and so did offensive lineman Carter Bykowski.

Last year, Jerick McKinnon also hurt his back in the weight room, and standout center John Sullivan needed multiple back operations this year, which kept him off the field for the entire season.

Injuries happen in the NFL, and it’s hard to know if these injuries are merely a coincidence or are the result of Marcus’ training program, which he said at the time he took the job was centered around lifting free weights as opposed to using weight machines. But specifically with the string of pectoral (chest muscle) injuries, that would be a very big coincidence to have each of those on the same team in just two years.
