Bleacher Report – Vikings

Valuable blocker Rhett Ellison done for the year

By Derek Wetmore

The Vikings, winners of the NFC North, now face a tough test in the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the NFL playoffs at TCF Bank Stadium. And they’ll have to face that tall task without an important offensive player.

Tight end Rhett Ellison will miss the remainder of the season with a torn patellar tendon, head coach Mike Zimmer said on his postgame radio show Sunday night.

Ellison caught a pass in the fourth quarter during the Vikings’ 20-13 win against the Packers in Green Bay, then Ellison immediately after left the game and was taken to the trainer’s table. He was very quickly ruled out for the rest of the game, which turned out to be a bad sign.

While he’s by no means a household name around the NFL, Ellison has proven valuable to the Vikings this season. They’ve seen their share of struggles along the offensive line, and a tight end like Ellison is valuable in blocking sets, specifically when he lines up next rookie right tackle T.J. Clemmings to provide a little more reinforcement in protecting Teddy Bridgewater or opening up running lanes for Adrian Peterson.

Ellison also has the ability to catch passes, and one teammate once called him the best football player on the team, in terms of being a complete package.

He finishes the 2015 season with 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown, but its his versatility that will be more missed than his offensive production.

Ellison is a free agent at season’s end, which means the Vikings will have a decision to make this offseason as to whether or not they’d like to bring him back after his rookie contact runs up. The Vikings already have Kyle Rudolph signed to a long-term contract, although those two perform different roles.

The Vikings also drafted tight end MyCole Pruitt in the 5th round this year.
