Bleacher Report – Vikings

‘No T-shirts,’ Vikings don’t need a reminder of this weekend’s gravity

By Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — When players arrived at the Vikings’ Winter Park training facilities on Monday, their lockers didn’t have any extras to remind them of this weekend’s gravity.

Fresh off a 49-17 throttling of the New York Giants on Sunday night, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer granted his players the standard ‘victory Monday,’ which means players only report for workouts and treatment. When meetings resume on Wednesday, Zimmer said he intends to lay out a normal week into Sunday’s season finale at Green Bay, which will decide the winner of the NFC North and host site for a first-round playoff game.

“I’m going to talk to them about the things we didn’t do good in this ball game,” Zimmer said Monday. “And the things we have to improve on in order to win. I don’t know if it’s a big motivational kind of week. It’s more about preparation and doing things right and performing. Performing under pressure.”

Zimmer, the Vikings’ straight-shooting drill sergeant, isn’t one to entice fanfare around his team, anyway. But among the team T-shirts ordered for this season, including one with the simple G.I.D. abbreviation for ‘Get It Done,’ they included a ‘Beat Green Bay’ shirt rolled out for the Vikings’ Week 11 home matchup against the Packers.

Riding a five-game win streak at the time, the Vikings’ shirts gained outside attention. That weekend, they lost 30-13 to Green Bay, undone by penalties, Aaron Rodgers, the revival of Eddie Lacy and their own ineffective offense, among other things.

“No T-shirts, no T-shirts,” Zimmer said late Sunday night.

The Vikings (10-5) are once again surging into a bout with the Packers, only this time the stakes are higher. Not only are they presented with an opportunity for their first win over Green Bay under Zimmer, they’re doing so to dethrone the four-time reigning NFC North champions.

Noise around Winter Park is growing once again, but these humbled Vikings have tweaked the approach from last month.

“Not this week,” defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd said of the T-shirts. “I still got my other one and I wear it quite often, because I didn’t forget about that game as well.”

They’ve made the leap to the 2015 postseason. Regardless of what happens next week at Lambeau Field, the Vikings are a playoff team. At the controls, Zimmer’s public message is the Vikings aren’t settling for less than a division championship.

He’s also not pumping their tires as the Vikings are 0-3 this season against the NFC playoff field.

“I don’t think anybody is real worried about us,” Zimmer said. “There’s Arizona, Seattle, Green Bay, Carolina. There are a lot of pretty good teams out there. They’re probably not too worried about us.”
