Bleacher Report – Vikings

Odell Beckham Jr.’s one-game suspension upheld, won’t play vs. Vikings

By Andrew Krammer

Adrian Peterson didn’t think Odell Beckham Jr.’s actions on Sunday warranted a suspension, but NFL appeals officer James Thrash did not agree.

Beckham’s one-game suspension has been upheld by Thrash, the NFL announced on Wednesday, meaning he will be held out of Sunday night’s game against the Vikings. Beckham was flagged for three personal fouls in the New York Giants’ 38-35 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

On a conference call with local reporters on Wednesday , Giants coach Tom Coughlin said “you’d be naive” to think Beckham was the only one at fault. Beckham and Panthers cornerback Josh Norman were engaged in post-play shoving matches throughout the game. Norman was reportedly fined more than $26,000. Reasons surfaced for why Beckham acted the way he did, including feeling threatened by Panthers players. His actions included a blatant spearing, blindsiding Norman with the helmet-to-helmet hit.

Beckham was suspended on Monday by NFL V.P. of Football Operations Merton Hanks.

“Acts that jeopardize the safety of players or expose them to unnecessary risk cannot be tolerated,” Hanks said in a letter to Beckham.

Beckham released his own statement following his failed appeal.

Even with the chaotic scene on Sunday, Beckham was still dominant for the Giants. He caught the game-tying touchdown pass with fewer than two minutes remaining in the loss to Carolina. The Giants will be without their top playmaker in Minnesota, not dissimilar to taking Adrian Peterson off the Vikings’ offense. Beckham has accounted for roughly 30 percent of their passing targets and yardage.

“It’d definitely be a big loss for those guys,” cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said. “They got [Rueben] Randle, who has been outstanding. They’ve got guys that can step up. They’ve got Eli Manning at quarterback.”

The Vikings and Giants are scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. CT on Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium.
