Report: Odell Beckham Jr. appeal set for Wednesday

By Derek Wetmore

The Vikings should know by Wednesday whether or not they’ll have to contend with Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was suspended Monday for one game after a ‘flagrant’ safety violation.

After the suspension came down, Beckham would have three days to appeal a suspension. And according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, that appeal is set for Wednesday.

Under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, either James Thrash or Derrick Brooks would hear the appeal, and Mortensen reports that it will be Thrash.

It’s widely expected that a decision on the appeal will be known well in advance of Sunday’s game.

Multiple reports have surfaced since Sunday’s game that said Beckham was taunted and goaded into his physical and reckless play. Panthers players were seen carrying at least one baseball bat on the field before the game, which, according to reports, was perceived as a threatening gesture.

Beckham drew three penalties during Sunday’s game, a loss to the undefeated Carolina Panthers. During another instance, which the league deemed ‘particularly flagrant,’ Beckham ran back into a play and targeted cornerback Josh Norman with a helmet-to-helmet shot that blindsided the defensive back. In a league statement released Monday, the NFL said Beckham committed “multiple violations of safety-related playing rules.”

In a letter to Beckham, NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks told the Giants receiver that “At numerous times during yesterday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, your actions placed a fellow player at unnecessary risk…and clearly did not represent the high standards of sportsmanship expected,” according to a league release.
