Vikings athletic trainer: Adrian Peterson is ‘like Rubberman’

By Derek Wetmore

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Just because Teddy Bridgewater has come on mightily in the past two games doesn’t mean the Vikings want to get away from Adrian Peterson.

And Mike Zimmer sounds optimistic they won’t have to.

Peterson, who missed parts of Sunday’s game before and after halftime with an ankle injury, is expected to play Sunday night when the Vikings host the Giants. Peterson was seen in the locker room at the team’s practice facility Monday standing around without a boot or crutches. And the fact he returned to Sunday’s game is an encouraging sign for his health and availability going forward.

Team trainer Eric Sugarman even joked with Zimmer that the star running back is “like Rubberman,” Zimmer said.

Peterson carried the ball 18 total times for 63 yards (3.5 yards per carry) on Sunday, and he was split out wide as a decoy on a play that resulted in a touchdown catch by Stefon Diggs.

Without Peterson temporarily, second-year back Jerick McKinnon saw more action, and although he only picked up 10 yards on his seven carries, he was involved in the passing game and had four catches for 76 yards, including his first NFL touchdown.

On Monday, ESPN reported that Peterson had tests on his ankle that showed no further damage.

The Vikings play the Giants on Sunday night at TCF Bank Stadium. Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., New York’s offensive star, has been suspended for that game.
