Vikings work out a couple defensive tackles, including former first-round pick Phil Taylor

By Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — With Linval Joseph continuing to sit out practice on Tuesday, the Vikings hosted a couple defensive tackles for tryouts.

Phil Taylor, a former first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, worked out at the Vikings’ practice facility on Tuesday. Taylor, 27, was released in September during the Browns’ first wave of cuts, and has since chosen his visits ‘wisely,’ he told 1500 ESPN. Asked why he accepted the Vikings’ offer for a workout, Taylor said succinctly they’re a “winning program.”

Taylor, the 21st-overall pick in 2011 out of Baylor, spent much of last offseason rehabbing from knee surgery, and said he’s continued his rehab while working out in the three months he’s been away. He was reportedly released by the Browns with an injury settlement. He was most recently listed at 6-foot-3 and 335 pounds.

The Vikings have withstood multiple injuries to their nose tackles, namely the starter in Joseph, who has been held out for the previous two weeks with a foot injury and hasn’t practiced since the Nov. 29 win in Atlanta. The Vikings also lost second-year nose tackle Shamar Stephen for the year when he underwent surgery on his toe in October.

Nose tackle Kenrick Ellis has served a small rotational role since signing after Stephen’s injury, though the Vikings are doing their due diligence on who’s available at nose tackle.

They also worked out Toronto Argonauts defensive tackle Euclid Cummings, per a source. Cummings went undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2014 and has spent part of the past two years in the Canadian Football League. He posted eight sacks in 15 games for the Argonauts last season.
