Zimmer: Adrian Peterson ‘probably should’ have received more carries

By Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Mike Zimmer has navigated this storm before, and he can only hope it ends the same way as it did just two weeks ago.

After Adrian Peterson was limited to eight carries on 20 snaps in Sunday’s 38-7 blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, he once again said the Vikings were ‘outcoached’ as well as ‘outplayed,’ which were similar remarks he made in the same TCF Bank Stadium locker room just two weeks prior when he finished with 13 carries in a loss to Green Bay.

“I don’t really worry about other people’s opinions, I just worry about what I think,” Zimmer said when asked about Peterson’s remarks on Monday.

Do you think Peterson should’ve received more carries?

“Probably should.”

Peterson, 30, has taken more handoffs than any other running back in the NFL, and he still leads the league with 1,182 yards rushing despite finishing with a season-low 18 yards on Sunday against the Seahawks.

When Peterson first spoke up following the Nov. 22 loss to the Packers, Zimmer reportedly met with Peterson to rectify the situation and the result was 29 carries the following week in Atlanta, a win in which they never trailed. That obviously wasn’t the case vs. the Seahawks, as the Vikings trailed 21-0 by halftime.

Offensive coordinator Norv Turner did open the game with consecutive Peterson runs, but only dialed up three more handoffs to Peterson in the remainder of the first half (25 plays). Teddy Bridgewater dropped back 33 times by the final whistle, and threw for a career-low 118 passing yards.

The fact is the Vikings have a problematic passing game and rely heavily on Peterson, perhaps too heavily, as tight end Kyle Rudolph said Monday. They’ve shown they can’t win without him involved, as they’re 8-0 when he has at least 19 carries and 0-4 when he has 16 or fewer.

And the issue has only come to light when the Vikings fall in an early hole. They’re one of the best closing teams in football because of Peterson, but they haven’t been able to claw back from anything more than the 14-3 deficit they faced in Detroit; either because they’re a run-only team, or because Turner hasn’t stayed committed enough to Peterson in those situations to find out.
