Chad Greenway nominated by Vikings for Walter Payton Man of the Year

By Andrew Krammer

For the third time in five years, Chad Greenway has been nominated by his team for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year, an honor recognizing players for “their excellence off the field.”

Greenway, 32, is this year’s nominee after having also been chosen by the Vikings in 2011 and 2014. In his 10th NFL season, all in Minnesota, Greenway has an off-field track record of charitable work as consistent as his on-field performance as the team’s leading tackler from 2008 to 2013.

Founded in 2008, Greenway’s Lead the Way Foundation has served families in Minnesota and his home state of South Dakota for years. He’s the NFLPA’s reigning Byron “Whizzer” White Award winner, an honor annually bestowed upon a player “who serves his team, community and country in the spirit of Byron Raymond “Whizzer” White — the personification of the ideal to which professional football players aspire.”

All ‘Man of the Year’ nominees receive a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice, paid for by the NFL Foundation and Nationwide. Two runner-ups receive an additional $6,000 donation and the winner another $50,000 to the charity of his choice.

Finalists will be announced in January.
