Officials: 80 Percent Of Metrodome To Be Recycled

By Jeff Wald

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – If you drive by the site of what used to be the Metrodome now, you won’t recognize much of the former home of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority said Wednesday that more than 80 percent of the Metrodome will be recycled as part of the ongoing demolition, which will finish up next month and is currently on schedule. Stadium officials said excavation of the site is about 50 percent complete, which includes 400,000 cubic yards and 850,000 cubic yards of material that has been taken off site to be recycled.

Construction on the new stadium is also underway as 15 percent of the new piers (40 of 300) have been installed. About three percent of the concrete for the new stadium has been poured while foundational concrete elements are being formed. Officials said underground mechanical and electrical work is also underway.

MSFA authorities said more than 80 percent of the Metrodome will be recycled and the seats that were not sold were recycled.
