Workers Complete Deflation Of Metrodome Roof

By Jeff Wald

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It’s a bittersweet day for Minnesota Vikings fans as we say goodbye to the Metrodome for good.

It was deflation day for the Metrodome’s Teflon roof, and until early Saturday morning there was doubt weather conditions would allow construction crews to get it done. It was a risk with snow and windy conditions.

Officials deemed it safe to deflate the roof at just after 7 a.m., and the process only took about 35 minutes. What was once a signature of the Minneapolis skyline is now gone.

Heading into the process, stadium officials asked people to stay away from the area during the deflating process citing safety concerns. Workers had to shut off the electricity and open the doors, and the air supporting Teflon roof helped it fall immediately.

On Friday, people stopped by to take a few last photos of the skyline with the iconic dome.

“It’s going to be kind of weird to look at it and first see it without a Dome, and then not see it at all,” said Benson Hardy of Minneapolis.

Cameras placed inside and around the dome caught the roof coming down.

So what will crews do with the roof once it’s down? Officials said construction workers will cut it into very large pieces and we’re told they will use it as construction tarps.
