Bleacher Report – Vikings

Reports: Christian Ponder limited in London with rib injury

Word from across the pond early Wednesday morning is Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder suffered a rib injury in the loss to the Cleveland Browns and was limited in practice this morning.

The Vikings left for London on Monday as they are the ‘home’ team and mandated to host a bevy of events this week. They’ll play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

“If I can’t fulfill my duties, then Matt (Cassel) is going to step in and play,” Ponder said according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today. “The biggest concern is contact…my mindset is I’m going to play.”

Ponder ran five times for 46 yards on Sunday and was sacked six times, so a rib injury isn’t surprising. However, the Vikings already have depth issues in their defensive secondary and can ill afford more injuries, unless Cassel steps in and performs circa 2010, when he threw for 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions as the leader of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ponder suffered a mysterious tricep injury in last year’s season finale against the Green Bay Packers and finished the game, but was unable to return for the playoff rematch. Ponder reportedly said he was fine to finish the game against the Browns and that he threw normally in walkthrough on Wednesday, but is worried about worsening the injury by taking any more hits.

Ponder has seven turnovers (five interceptions, two fumbles) in the 0-3 start.
