Bleacher Report – Vikings

Antoine Winfield pursuing NFL return in “right situation”

By Curtis Crabtree

When the Seattle Seahawks told Antoine Winfield that they planned to release him in August, the 15-year veteran cornerback elected to call it a career. He had been named to an All-Pro team and was a three-time Pro Bowl selection in his time with the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings.

However, Winfield never filed retirement papers and is now considering a return to the league if the right opportunity presents.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com, Winfield is working out in the Houston area and is amenable to a return to football in the “right situation.”

Winfield made it clear this summer that the reason he signed with the Seahawks (for less money than he was offered to return to the Vikings) was because he wanted to win a Super Bowl and he believed Seattle gave him the best opportunity to realize that goal. After a distinguished 15-year career, Winfield no longer has to play football. If he decides to play again, it will likely only be for a team that has a chance to make the playoffs and a deep postseason run.

Seattle didn’t have room for Winfield in a deep secondary and saved $1 million against their salary cap with his release, but Winfield is still a quality player and can help a team in need of a nickel cornerback.
