Vikings injury updates: Chris Cook, Jamarca Sanford, A.J. Jefferson

MINNEAPOLIS — As training camp rolled around, depth in the secondary was a concern for the Vikings. That lack of depth manifested itself Sunday, as Chris Cook, Jamarca Sanford and A.J. Jefferson left the game with injuries. Jefferson returned in some defensive packages, but Cook and Sanford remained on the sidelines.

Marcus Sherels, Andrew Sendejo and Xavier Rhodes got playing time as a result. Following Sunday’s game, there was no immediate update on the availability of the trio of injured players for next week.

“When you get muscle pulls in the secondary, that affects you,” head coach Leslie Frazier said. “You don’t want to start getting into your depth this early in the season. Losing Jamarca and Chris, and potentially A.J., that’s a concern. We’ll have to see how they progress through the course of a week.”

Cook (groin) has never played a full season in the NFL. His loss was a blow to the cornerbacks, but Marcus Sherels played reasonably well.

“I thought Sherels did a good job — made some plays, got his hands on some balls, really competed hard, like he always does, and put himself in good position. I thought Marcus did a good job,” Frazier said.

Sanford (hamstring) was a blow to the safeties. Sendejo, whom the Vikings recently handed a two-year contract extension, saw reps at safety Sunday.

Jefferson replaced Cook but tweaked his ankle. He re-entered the game, as the Vikings needed to use all four of their healthy corners in dime packages in passing situations.
