Minneapolis, MN – Eleven years ago, Kevin Williams played his first NFL snap against the San Francisco 49ers. 317 tackles, 56.5 sacks, 5 interceptions and 158 starts later Kevin Williams stands to set a Minnesota Vikings record this Sunday against Cleveland becoming the defensive tackle with the most starts in franchise history.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Williams said Friday when asked his thoughts about the feat. “I’ve just been showing up, doing my job and that’s where we’re at. It’s a blessing to be able to make that make starts…it’s awesome to be able to start that long and play that well in the NFL.”

Williams, the 9th overall selection in the 2003 NFL Draft, came in and joined a Vikings defensive line that was anchored at the time by Lance Johnstone and Chris Hovan. Williams started all 16 games his rookie season and went on to lead the team with 10.5 sacks lining up from both the defensive end and defensive tackle positions. Throughout his eleven year career and 162 Vikings regular season games, Williams has only missed five starts.

When asked about the biggest factor that kept him healthy and on the field, Williams joked by replying, “I don’t know, maybe being breast-fed helped a lot! That’s how you get the best nutrients you can get.”

In reality, Williams has been blessed with great genetics and great fortune that have allowed him to avoid injuries and keep him healthy enough to play week in and week out.

To boot, each and every one of Williams 157 games have been played for the team that drafted him in 2003, the Minnesota Vikings.

“In this day and age with all the guys getting paid and everything and all the money flying around, that’s huge [to stay with one team],” Williams explained. “I was excited to still be able to be here this year and hopefully, you know, I can play next year here. I have no intentions of going anywhere else. I would love to finish here.”

On Sunday, Kevin will pass Pro Football Hall of Famer Alan Page (157) for most starts as a Vikings defensive lineman. Others on that list include John Randle (150 starts), Chris Doleman (142) and Jared Allen (75).
