Bleacher Report – Vikings

Kevin Williams misses Friday's practice, but should play Sunday

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams should play at the Chicago Bears on Sunday despite missing Friday’s practice for personal reasons, according to coach Leslie Frazier.

Williams, 33, has practiced just twice, on Wednesday and Thursday, after missing every practice and game since the Aug. 25 injury he suffered in a preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“He had a personal matter, nothing to do with him physically,” Frazier said. “We’ve seen enough.”

Frazier said he hadn’t spoke with Williams at midday on Friday, but added that Williams felt comfortable after a full practice on Thursday and that he isn’t worried of any lingering soreness. Williams suffered a hyperextension and bone bruise to his right knee and was on a crutch up until last week.

The Vikings could use all 311 pounds of Williams after surrendering 283 combined yards to Lions’ running backs Reggie Bush and Joique Bell through the air and on the ground in Sunday’s loss.

“We’ll have to monitor how he’s doing in between series, just talk to him some times, see how he’s doing, just to make sure that he’s functioning properly,” Frazier said. “We’ll kind of have to play it by ear.”

An aging Williams was already on a shortened, prescribed snap count of 30 to 40 plays, according to Frazier in training camp. So with him potentially even more limited, look for rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd, along with Letroy Guion and Everson Griffen, in nickel situations, to fill in at undertackle.
