Bleacher Report – Vikings

Snaps limited, Cordarrelle Patterson gets green light on deep kickoffs

By akrammer@1500espn.com

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings rookie receiver Cordarrelle Patterson watched four of six kickoffs sail over his head in Sunday’s 34-24 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Patterson, the team’s final first-round pick in April’s draft, only saw five offensive snaps and said coaches gave him the green light to return kickoffs, no matter how far back he is.

“It’s kind of frustrating,” Patterson said. “My coach, he feels comfortable in me. Wherever I catch it at, eight or nine-yards deep, he just told me to bring it out. He expect me to do good things.”

Patterson returned the final two kickoffs he saw during Sunday’s second half, both from eight yards deep in the endzone. He averaged 27 yards per return.

The University of Tennessee product burst onto the scene during the preseason opener, when he took the opening kickoff back 50 yards, racking up 104 total yards in the first half. That’s partially why his limited snaps on Sunday surprised so many.

A back injury listed Patterson on the injury report as ‘limited’  twice last week, but he said that wasn’t an issue in his playing time.

Patterson said he hasn’t been told about his snap count at Chicago.

“No, not at all,” Patterson said. “I just go in every day to practice, try to get better. Don’t matter how many snaps I get, I just make the most of what I get.
