Bleacher Report – Vikings

Kevin Williams practiced Wednesday and could play Sunday in Chicago

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams could play this Sunday if all continues to go well.

Williams participated – although he was limited – in Wednesday’s no-pads practice, his first time back in action since taking a cheap shot that bruised and hyperextended his right knee in the team’s third preseason game. It had been two and a half weeks since the Aug. 25 injury.

“We were just feeling it out, seeing how it felt and it felt great,” Williams said of his knee. He added that Thursday’s practice is likely the critical day to decide if he’ll play this week when the Vikings go to Chicago to place the Bears. The team will wear pads Thursday and Williams will practice if he’s not too sore from Wednesday’s action.

“Hopefully I won’t be too sore tomorrow because I haven’t done anything in a couple weeks and we’ll go from there,” Williams said. “Hopefully everything’s on track.”

He said although the team didn’t wear pads Wednesday, players still were moving fast, and it allowed him to get some “quick movement” work as he attempts to get back into the speed of the game.

“Just a chance to react full speed, see how the leg holds up,” he said.

Williams, 33, may have lost a step in recent years, but he’s still an important part of the interior run defense. The defense looked Sunday like it sorely missed the six-time Pro Bowler; Lions running backs Reggie Bush and Joique Bell frequently found running room up the middle on rushes and screen passes.

Head coach Leslie Frazier sounded hopeful earlier in the day that he’d get Williams back for Sunday.

“Kevin is so important to us that his absence, it makes a difference,” Frazier said. “[Detroit] did run the ball effectively against us. Having Kevin, I think it would have helped us, for sure. Glad to have him back [at practice], hopefully everything will go fine this week and we’ll have him on Sunday [against Chicago] as well.”
