Kevin Williams back at practice, on track to play Sunday

The Vikings defense didn’t do much to slow down the Lions offense in Week One and one reason why they might have struggled was the absence of defensive tackle Kevin Williams, who missed the game with a knee injury he suffered on a low block by 49ers guard Joe Looney in the preseason.

Williams was back at practice on Wednesday, however, and he’s been given clearance for a return to a full workload. Coach Leslie Frazier said that Williams will be in the lineup against the Bears on Sunday as long as he doesn’t aggravate the injury in the next few days. He sounded like a man very happy to see Williams on the field when he met with the media after practice.

“Kevin is so important to us that his absence, it makes a difference,” Frazier said, via the Pioneer Press. “He was one of the best ever to play the position so anytime you don’t have him, not only from a performance standpoint but a leadership standpoint, it’s going to affect your team.”

Rookie Sharrif Floyd would move back into a reserve role if Williams is able to play against the Bears, which should improve both the Vikings’ depth and their production up front.
