Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings moving on without defensive tackle Christian Ballard

by Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Christian Ballard hasn’t been on a field with the team since the preseason opener against the Houston Texans on Aug. 9.

Placed on the active/left-squad list a week later, Ballard hasn’t been seen around the Vikings practice facilities since. Coach Leslie Frazier said on Wednesday that he hasn’t spoken with Ballard in about a week and the Vikings are moving on.

“I think you have to approach it that way,” Frazier said. “We have to get the guys ready that are here and practicing every day. We have to move forward.”

The Vikings have a roster exemption for Ballard as long as he remains on the reserve/left-squad list during the regular season.

“If he decides he wants to come back, he’d have to go through us before he goes through another team,” Frazier said.

Ballard, 24, is due around $690,000 in base salary on his rookie contract that extends through 2014. Ballard figured to be a key rotational player along the defensive line, but his absence likely means more looks for rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd.
