Bleacher Report – Vikings

Floyd practicing, Williams not as Vikings begin regular season routine

by Andrew Krammer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Coach Leslie Frazier said there was ‘a chance’ that veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams would be ready for the Minnesota Vikings regular season opener at the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 8.

That chance may have taken a hit as Williams was not at practice on Monday.

The Vikings take Tuesday off, so Williams has only Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to practice with the team and prepare for the Lions. The veteran knows the defensive system inside and out, but it’s about getting through the routine and testing his knee, which suffered a hyperexention and severe bone contusion in a preseason game against the San Francsico 49ers on Aug. 24.

On a better note, rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd was a full participant at the beginning of practice. Floyd, still wearing a supportive sleeve on his left knee, should play against the Lions on Sunday and could be in for a much larger role if Williams sits out.

Floyd injured his knee in the preseason opener against the Houston Texans on Aug. 9. A MRI revelead no ligament damage to the knee and Floyd returned to the tune of 38 snaps in the second preseason game at the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 16.

However, Floyd’s knee was more sore than expected after the Bills game and the Vikings chose to conduct a ‘minor procedure’ on Aug. 19 to relieve some pressure in the front of his knee.

Floyd, 22, was the Vikings first overall selection in April’s draft and shot out of the gates in his limited exhibition action. If Floyd can’t go, the Vikings are down to defensive tackle Chase Baker as Williams’ replacement.

Pracitce squad full

On Monday morning, the Vikings announced the addition of defensive end Tristan Okpalaugo to their practice squad.

Formerly of Fresno State and briefly the Miami Dolphins, Okpalaugo registered three preseason sacks and was left off the Dolphins’ practice squad.
