Vikings add seven to practice squad, one spot open

The Minnesota Vikings continued the busy weekend by announcing seven players to their practice squad on Sunday.

Tight end Chase Ford, running back Joe Banyard and offensive tackle Kevin Murphy all rejoin the scrimmage squad after spending parts or all of 2012 on the unit.

Banyard is the most likely of the three to find a job elsewhere during the season. The second-year player impressed in Thursday’s preseason finale, racking up 116 total yards on 20 touches. Banyard cleared waivers, but injuries thin rosters during the season and he’s done enough to deserve a look from other teams.

Seventh-round draft picks Everett Dawkins (DT) and Travis Bond (OG) join after being waived in Saturday’s cuts.

Dawkins and Bond were both rather transparent in the preseason. Bond didn’t even play in the third game against San Francisco and should use the time on the practice squad to adapt to the NFL level and potentially switch from guard to tackle, a position his 6-foot-7, 330-pound frame is better suited for than at guard.

Undrafted rookies Adam Thielen and Rodney Smith both join as the group’s only receivers.

Smith saw just 39 snaps in four exhibitions, but caught three passes, one for a touchdown, and averaged 29-yards per catch. Thielen didn’t post those numbers, but impressed coaches with his work ethic and attitude. Thielen, like teammate Marcus Sherels, completes the in-state circuit — born in Detroit Lakes, Minn., graduated from Minnesota-State Mankato and is now a member of the Vikings.

The Vikings have one spot available.
