Reports: Vikings claim former Bears OT Webb off waivers

by Andrew Krammer

The Minnesota Vikings reportedly claimed former Chicago Bears tackle J’Marcus Webb, less than 24 hours after he was cut by the divisional rival.

Webb became famous for getting on Bears quarterback Jay Cutler’s bad side, publicly shoving the tackle after Webb missed an assignment leading to a Cutler sack in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers last season.

Webb started 44 games for Chicago across three seasons, opening at right tackle in his rookie season before switching to left in the next two. Webb struggled mightily this offseason, ultimately switched back to right tackle and was replaced by a rookie fifth-round draft pick at starter.

His base salary was $630,000 in 2013, so it’s a cheap, veteran pickup for the Vikings. Both left tackle Matt Kalil and right tackle Phil Loadholt played all 1,097 snaps last season and Webb is nothing but a contingency plan.

The Vikings likely found their swing tackle after parting ways with OT Brandon Keith in Saturday’s cuts.
