Bleacher Report – Vikings

Vikings trim 13 players off roster

by Andrew Krammer

The Minnesota Vikings announced the release of 13 players on Monday, the most notable being defensive end Lawrence Jackson.

The cuts on offense:

QB James Vandenberg
WR Chris Summers
WR LaMark Brown
WR Erik Highsmith
RB Bradley Randle
RB Jerodis Williams
G Tyler Holmes
C Camden Wentz

DE Lawrence Jackson
DE Marquis Jackson
LB Stanford Keglar
CB Greg McCoy
CB Roderick Williams

Receiver Chris Summers and guard Tyler Holmes are cut after spending 2012 on the Vikings practice squad. April’s draft wasn’t kind to either player, as the team stacked ammo at both positions.

From Sunday

Receiver LaMark Brown saw the most snaps of any offensive player to be cut after Sunday’s preseason loss at San Francisco: logging 10 plays, one target and no receptions. Summers played eight snaps for two targets and no catches while receiver Erik Highsmith saw just one snap without a target.

Defensive end Lawrence Jackson was given the longest look of any Vikings player to be cut. Jackson registered two quarterback hurries on 20 snaps against the 49ers. Jackson compiled six QB hurries, one QB hit and one tackle in 87 preseason snaps.

The Vikings elected to keep, for at least another five days, a player like undrafted rookie defensive tackle Spencer Nealy over Jackson, likely due to Kevin Williams and Sharrif Floyd’s knee injuries that thinned depth on the interior.

Cornerback Roderick Williams saw 13 snaps and allowed a 22-yard completion on the only ball thrown his way. Williams also missed a tackle.

Quarterback James Vandenberg, running back Jerodis Williams, guard Tyler Holmes, center Camden Wentz and defensive end Marquis Jackson did not play on Sunday.

The Vikings roster now stands at 75 after placing receiver Greg Childs on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. The team also gets a roster exemption for defensive tackle Christian Ballard, who is on the active/left squad list.
