Greg Jennings: Goal vs 49ers is to ‘not look like we did last week’

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings receiver Greg Jennings was asked another comparison question between his new team, and the old one in the Green Bay Packers.

This time, Jennings didn’t bite on an inquiry regarding his former team and placed the emphasis on the Vikings offense, which needs to see a breath of life in the third preseason game at the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

“Not so much trying to jump back into what we did in Green Bay, my focus is simply what we’re doing to be a better team here,” Jennings said when asked about the two team’s game week routines. “I think with that approach, I’m embracing every change, everything that’s new, everything that’s similar.”

As the final tune-up game before the regular season opener, Jennings is preparing as if it weren’t an exhibition along with his teammates — studying game film and implementing strategies in practice to stop the 49ers’ strengths.

But after a dismal performance at the Buffalo Bills on Friday, where the first-team offense amassed four first downs and three points on five drives, Jennings said the Vikings need to focus on their own issues as much as the game plan for the 49ers.

“We need to sustain drives and feel like we’re progressing as an offense,” Jennings said. “And not look like we did last week. Get more rhythm and allow the chemistry to start to flow and get the train moving in the right direction.”

Seven years in Green Bay, Jennings grew accustom to not playing much in the preseason.

But in San Francisco, Jennings will need to continue to adjust to a new system — and run routes for likely the only time before the regular season with running back Adrian Peterson in the backfield.

Jennings has one reception from quarterback Christian Ponder in two preseason games and Sunday’s contest should reveal a little about how the Vikings plan to utilize Jennings with the reigning NFL MVP in the game.

“[I’m] trying to adapt and make sure I fit,” Jennings said. “Put my puzzle piece in the right spot so we can come out seamless when all is said and done.”
