Still Waiting…Ponder Fails To Convince Doubters In Preseason Game #2

Minneapolis, MN – The first two years of Christian Ponder’s NFL career haven’t exactly followed suit with the “happily ever after” plot line that he had dreamt about growing up as a child in suburban Dallas, Texas. Two seasons that have yielded 25 interceptions and only 31 touchdowns have many in Minnesota wondering if Ponder is the man for the job.

With two preseason games under his belt leading up to this 2013 season, Ponder hasn’t done much to silence the critics and has Vikings brass still waiting to see if the future of the Vikings will include Christian Ponder under center.

Friday night in Buffalo, Ponder put up what will amount to be another disappointing performance. As Coach Frazier promised earlier this week, Ponder played into the second quarter completing 5-of-12 passes for only 53 yards (a passer rating of 55.2). Yet another less than convincing performance from the third-year quarterback that didn’t help his cause given the ups and downs that have plagued him through most of his career.

In fairness to Ponder, he didn’t receive a whole lot of help from those around him, in particular the offensive line and his blocking backs. Christian Ponder, who was sacked on the very first play of the game, was under the immense pressure of a blitzing Bills defense that tallied two sacks and three tackles for loss against the Vikings first-team offense.

All-in-all, the Vikings offense struggled mightily through the first half of Friday night’s game. It was dropped passes, missed blocks and high snaps galore for the Purple. A performance that could not have left a good taste in the mouth of head coach Leslie Frazier.

Ponder and this Vikings offense are expected to play through the entire first-half next Sunday night as Minnesota heads to San Francisco to play the 49ers on national TV. It will likely be the final action that the first unit will see before kicking off the regular season September 8th in Detroit.
