Bleacher Report – Vikings

Training camp Day 15 quick hits: Two one-handed catches end camp

•The Minnesota Vikings 2013 training camp came to a close with probably the two best catches of the entire program.

Receiver Cordarrelle Patterson stuck his left arm out and around cornerback A.J. Jefferson as he was 30 yards downfield, snagging a one-handed grab from backup quarterback Matt Cassel. Jefferson was in position, but was bested.

“Man, them one-handed catches don’t mean anything,” Patterson said. “One-handed catch is like a two-handed catch as long as you catch the ball.”

•Receiver Jarius Wright had a just as impressive catch, if not better, over cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who was mauling Wright and was called for a pass interference along the sidelines.

Wright stuck his left arm out and underneath Rhodes’ arm and came away with the catch in the first-team offense’s two-minute drill.

“I was thinking I had the win, I knew it was a big, physical corner who was going to try and get his hands on me, ” Wright said. “Like I said, Christian [Ponder] has a lot of trust in me, threw the ball and I just tried to make a play.”

•Rhodes stayed physical throughout the day, trucking receiver Stephen Burton after he caught a pass on a zero route from third-string quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson during his two-minute drill.

•Quarterback Christian Ponder had another impressive outing on Wednesday, looking very decisive in his reads and completing 8-of-10 throws in passing drills and 3-of-4 in the two-minute drill.

Ponder had one overthrow of receiver Greg Jennings in the goal line exercise, but otherwise was on point.

•Frazier and Ponder both talked about the need to build a rapport between Ponder and Jennings. The emphasis was evident, as three of Ponder’s first four passes went Jennings’ way, all for completions.

•Nothing is perfect, shown by linebacker Gerald Hodges and cornerback Roderick Williams, who stared at each other with their palms facing the sky as receiver Chris Summers was left wide open for a deep catch from Bethel-Thompson.

Both Hodges and Williams had a breakdown in communication, thinking the other was on Summers.

•Cassel overthrew receiver Adam Thielen in the middle of the field and safety Mistral Raymond came away with the interception.

•The 15th and final training camp practice ended with Bethel Thompson sailing an interception to cornerback Marcus Sherels.

As Sherels ran down the field, he was swarmed by a group of receivers that were not in the play, but decided to make it 11-on-20-something for the cornerback.

•After sitting out Tuesday’s practice, linebacker Michael Mauti returned and was a full participant, still sporting the brace on his left knee that he rested the day before.

•Cornerback Chris Cook was a full participant on Wednesday and coach Leslie Frazier said he will be fine after leaving Tuesday’s practice early.

•Cornerback Jacob Lacey (knee) and defensive tackle Christian Ballard (groin) should be the only ones to miss Friday’s game. However, fullback Jerome Felton was absent from the afternoon practice, despite being at Wednesday morning’s walkthrough.
