Bleacher Report – Vikings

Halftime: Vikings up 13-10, Cordarrelle Patterson has 104 total yards

Minnesota Vikings rookie receiver Cordarrelle Patterson has left a good first impression.

Patterson returned the opening kickoff 50 yards and caught four passes for 54 yards in his first two quarters of play.

Patterson also rammed into a few defenders, utilizing his 6-foot-2-inch, 220-pound frame to excel in run blocking situations.

Starting quarterback Christian Ponder played only one series, usurped by backup quarterback Matt Cassel after throwing an interception on his second pass to reciever Jerome Simpson. Simpson reached out for the ball, which was a little overthrown, but Ponder received no help as Simpson tipped the ball into the air for defenders.

Simpson caught Ponder’s one completion for 15 yards on the previous play.

Undrafted rookie fullback Zach Line was most likely the only one more ecstatic than Patterson about making his NFL debut. The Southern Methodist product caught a Cassel pass near the line of scrimmage and romped downfield for another 60 yards, breaking through a couple defenders, for the Vikings only first-half touchdown.

Cassel’s uneasy feet, often stammering without pressure in the backfield, led to one interception when he made a bad choice by throwing to tight end John Carlson, who was covered by Houston Texans safety Eddie Pleasant.

Receiver Stephen Burton caught two passes for 59 yards, both from Cassel, including a 56-yard catch-and-run to set up the Vikings first field goal.

Vikings cornerback Bobby Felder appeared to have Houston Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins covered, but quarterback T.J. Yates still managed to complete a 34-yard touchdown pass over Felder as Hopkins had the hops and the hold to come down with it.

Rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd was credited for a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and swatted a Yates pass before he appeared to tweak his left knee in the second quarter. Floyd was down on the field for a brief moment before lightly jogging off the field.

The Vikings said Floyd’s return is unlikely.
